The mission of the ESC-20 mathematics team is to build leadership capacity through long-term and intensive training with teacher leaders. Participants attend high quality, relevant training in concepts specifically correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for mathematics.
Our main goal is to improve academic achievement of students in mathematics by providing high quality, sustained, and high intensity professional development focused on the education of mathematics teachers as a career-long process. The process is designed to strengthen teachers' knowledge and skills through activities that are founded on scientifically based research and aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics.
Our teachers, curriculum coordinators, and supervisors have received between 3 and 36 hours of training. Many of our teachers have attended multiple sessions, and are on their way to becoming mathematics leaders on their campuses.
Educators who have attended TRC training have reported the following:
“I think every teacher needs to go through this training in the college courses.”
“Students must make connections in order to learn.”
“(I received) some very good ways to present multiplication that actually demonstrated what was involved in the process.”
“These MTC and MTR workshops were like defragmentation is to a computer harddrive.”
“Excellent strategies to use with class- eye opening WOWs on how to teach.”
“It opened my eyes to new ways of presenting and explaining materials.”
“A great hands-on workshop where I learned how to teach concepts as the foundation for traditional algorithms.”
“TEKS are not a foreign language…”
“It got me thinking about REAL UNDERSTANDING.”
“Listen to the students. Hear what they are thinking.”

Title:Math TEKS Connections, Gr. 9-12
Description:Mathematics TEKS Connections (MTC) is a research-based, professional development opportunity for 9-12 mathematics educators. The primary focus of MTC is to build awareness of the inherent alignment between concepts and the connection to other concepts or big ideas vertically with a grade band and other strands within the grade level.
Date: June 5, 2008
Title: Exemplary Mathematics Program Overview
Description:The six NCTM principles - Equity, Curriculum, Teaching, Learning, Assessment and Technology - are presented as the fundamentals for a high-quality mathematics program. Learn about these principles so that the decisions you make are based on what makes a strong mathematics program. The session will offer actions that administrators can take to support mathematics education in their school.
Date: June 17-18, 2008
Title: Math TEKS Connections, Gr. 6-8
Description: Mathematics TEKS Connections (MTC) is a research based professional development opportunity for math educators. The primary focus of MTC is to build awareness of the inherent alignment between concepts and connections to other concepts or big ideas vertically within a grade band and other strands within a grade level.
Date: June 23-24, 2008
Title: Math TEKS Connections, Gr. K-2
Description: This 2-day professional development is designed to investigate mathematics as a connected body of knowledge, rather than as isolated topics. The goal of this workshop is to facilitate greater awareness of core instructional skills tied to math TEKS including understanding children's mathematical thinking, building place value concepts, developing addition and subtraction concepts and assessing mathematical thinking.
Date: June 26-27, 2008
Title: Math TEKS Connections, Gr. 3-5
Description: This 2-day professional development is designed to investigate mathematics as a connected body of knowledge, rather than as isolated topics. The goal of this workshop is to facilitate greater awareness of core instructional skills tied to math TEKS with a focus on fractions and multiplication and division concepts.
Date: June 30-July 1, 2008
Title: Math TEKS Refinements, Gr. 6-8
Description:The MTR (Math TEKS Refinements) is a balance of intense thinking with hands-on experiences. It includes an overview of the refined TEKS, specific information to address the refinements regarding probability and statistics, as well as how to use assessment to improve instruction.
Date: July 14-15, 2008
Title: Math TEKS Refinements, Gr. 9-12
Description:The Mathematics TEKS Refinement (MTR) training is a balance of intense thinking with hands-on experiences. It includes an overview of the refined TEKS, specific information to address the refinements regarding Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry, and how to use assessment as a means to improve instruction.
Date: July 21-22, 2008
Title: Geometry MTC, Gr. 9-12
Description: Mathematics TEKS Connections (MTC) is a research-based, professional development opportunity for 9-12 mathematics educators. The primary focus of MTC is to build awareness of the inherent alignment between Geometry concepts and the connection to Algebra I. Participants will receive an array of student lessons that will be examined during this session.
Date: July 23-25, 2008
Title: Maximizing Algebra II Performance
Description: Maximizing Algebra II Performance (MAP) provides Algebra II mathematics educators with an opportunity to increase their depth of understanding in teaching from the concrete to the abstract, from concepts to procedures, and making connections using a functions-based approach. Participants will receive student lessons that reflect these connections.
