Mission

To provide Region 16 science teachers with a support system of scientifically researched, sustained, and high intensity professional development and mentoring to assist them in the implementation of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

Accomplishments

405 teachers have received professional development (STM) and 1,498 teachers (CMs) have been mentored since our Collaborative was established in 1992. Two "Honoring the Teacher" Events have been conducted. Involvement in the NSF Project ESTT(1997-1999); EXXON Mini-Grants (1997-2000); Toyota USA Foundation Grants (2001-05), Shell Science Fair Grants (2005-2007). 12 Distinguished Teacher Awards at the Annual Meetings (1997-2007). In-service and pre-service teachers K-12 have been impacted due the reform and collaboration among the partnering institutions.

January 18-April 19, 2008 Title: Integrated Chemistry K-8
Description: Activity-based chemistry course taught by Mary Graff, Amarillo College. Journaling and Quaility Assessment/TSDS included.

August 22, 2008 Title: Region 16 Collaborative for Excellence in Science Teaching: Administrators Overview
Description: Administrators in attendance will receive a kit of materials to take back to their campuses. There will also be opportunities to participate in sample instructional activities typical of a Region 16 Collaborative for Excellence in Science Teaching session.
September 12- December 5, 2008 Title: Physical Science 1315
Description: Three hour physical science credit course to include physics, earth space science, Texas Connection distance learning from McDonald Observatory, TXESS Revolution, Palo Duro Canyon field trip, journaling, mentoring and assessment.
January 16 – March 27, 2009            Title: Physical Science 1317
Description: Three hour physical science credit course to include chemistry for high school and middle school TEKS, journaling, Blackboard Science Laboratory Safety, and mentoring.
June 2009, Summer I Title: Advanced Secondary Science Methods
Description: Three hour graduate science methods to include laboratory strategies, classroom management, and English Language Learners.
