Description

Middle & High School Numeracy: Solid research at the elementary level shows how to help all students become mathematically proficient by redefining what it means to compute with number sense.  Pam Harris has spent the past ten years scrutinizing the research and using the resulting reform materials with teachers and students, seeing what works and what doesn’t work, always with an eye to success in higher math. This material brings these insights to the secondary world, with an emphasis on one powerful goal: building powerful numeracy.

Harris' approach emphasizes representation and problem strings that lead to more engagement, confidence, and success in higher mathematics. The materials are designed for immediate "turn around" for teacher professional development. Materials include: Building Powerful Numeracy for Middle & High School Students: Building Powerful Numeracy in the Classroom, and Facilitator's Guide. Pam Harris, experienced mathematics consultant and developer of these materials will present this work.

This session is Part One of two sessions needed to complete the PDA. Part Two will be offered in the Spring of 2012.
