Region 1 Collaborative / Edinburg

Untitled document

Mission

To empower Region One science teachers with sustained, high-quality professional development that will enhance their teaching environment with research-based, dynamic curricular programs that focus on the TEKS and national standards. This Collaborative will foster mentoring and sharing of knowledge by encouraging networking and partnerships between teachers, our local university, and schools. The teachers will promote science excellence by acquiring and disseminating this knowledge in their home districts and attempt to reduce the achievement gap in their science performance by teaching scientific literacy to all students. This spirit of engagement must also extend beyond the borders of our Collaborative as we seek to stimulate, serve, and shape our community.

Accomplishments

This year's focus for the Region One Texas Regional Science Collaborative has been to support secondary instruction in the areas of chemistry and physics. Our elementary teachers will continue to be serviced through outreach programs such as Geology: A Change in Time; Bridging II TAKS; Elementary GLOBE; Journaling, and other best practices for the elementary science teacher. Currently participating in the 2008-2009 Region One Texas Regional Science Collaborative are 43 secondary STMs from 16 districts and 2 charter schools.

These teachers have started their trainings in chemistry and physics and have already been able to implement the content knowledge learned in their own classroooms. They continue to improve their pedogogy by doing an online book study through our moodle site which is presently offering a book study on What Effective Teachers Do Differently: 14 Things That Matter Most. Many of our STMs also added to their work load by starting this Fall Semester at The University of Texas Pan American as a cohort group to the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies-Chemical Education. The "rebel" team from Region One Texas Regional Science Collaborative will be implementing their TXeSS Revolution trainings during the spring semester.
