Description: |
Purpose of workshop: This workshop is geared toward teachers of 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. The design of the workshop is intended to provide teachers with research data on children’s thinking about fractions and the mathematical tasks related to that thinking. This knowledge will enable teachers to better to understand children’s reasoning, explanations and use of representations in solving problems involving fractions. The workshop will prepare teachers to use an interview protocol to assess individual children’s thinking. Finally, the class will focus on using what we learn about children’s thinking in fractions to design tasks or problems to use in small group or large group instruction.
Requirements: Participants will be expected to attend as a team from the same Collaborative. Teams should include two classroom teachers and one Instructional Team Member from their collaborative. Registrants will attend the two-day PDA and then meet with their team throughout the remainder of the school year to plan and discuss children’s thinking and plan additional tasks to do with their students. Some group tasks will be to team-teach lessons, report lessons and children’s strategies to Debbie Junk, PhD on the TRC community blog/web site, share lessons, and support other teachers’ use of promising tasks that elicit children’s thinking about addition and subtraction. Optionally, the team can invite other teachers from their campus to participate in the discussions about students’ work as an extension of this PDA. The three-member team will be expected to hold at least six discussion meetings and observe each other teach lessons based on tasks designed in the meetings at least two times per teacher. Participants will receive 12 professional development credits for this PDA. An additional 12-24 hours can be obtained for the discussion meetings, and lesson observations.
