Structured around the theme of “Effective P-16 Partnerships: Transforming the Culture of STEM Education,” this year’s Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching (TRC) Annual Meeting held June 30-July 2, 2009, celebrated the power of collaboration as we offered quality STEM professional development to teachers around the state.

TRC Coordinator for Technology Initiatives

Dr. Mitchell unveiled the new TRC Online Learning Community (TOLC) and discussed how STEM educators could be active participants. Every member of the TOLC can publish a professional journal, join in STEM related special interest groups, share professional development photos and videos, and take part in topic-based discussions. Everyone attending the Annual Meeting received an invitation to join the community.

The Content Coach: Raise Teacher Quality and Student Achievement

The goal of the content coach is to raise teacher quality and improve student achievement. In this interactive session, participants experience specific examples of reflective professional development around content, student learning styles, data analysis, and planning. The presenter reveals the secret for making demonstration lessons spark dramatic and positive schoolwide change. The materials include things needed to implement the structures and programs that empowered our diverse schools’ math scores to steadily rise.

Preceding the dinner, guests had an opportunity to view a showcase of exhibits designed by representatives from 36 Science Collaboratives and 24 Mathematics Collaboratives. Collaboratives shared innovative professional development programs and effective practices with each other.


Vendor Fair

The TRC Annual Meeting participants had access to 23 educational vendors at the Vendor Fair. Invited vendors were recommended from the TRC state-wide network of business community sponsors who provide materials, resources, tools and equipment, and a wealth of information for Pre-K to 12 grade science and mathematics classroom teachers. Featured vendors included Abrams Learning Trends, AIMS, Boston Museum of Science, CPO Science, Delta, Early Childhood Science, Fisher Science, FOSS, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Lab Aids, Lakeshore Learning Materials, NASA, National Geographic, PASCO, Sargent-Welch &Ward’s, TAKScopes, Texas Instruments, Texas Earth Science Studies, Transformation 2013, SmartSchool Systems, Texas Girls Collaboratives, and the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering.
