Loose springs and stiff springs When you extend or compress a spring, the spring, your work is converted into stored elastic potential energy in the spring. When released, the stored energy causes the spring to oscillate. In some technologies, the oscillations are undesirable. In this investigation, you will use an interactive simulation to study the properties of springs and learn how to damp out those oscillations. In the process you will learn how the shock absorbers in a car work!

Part 1: Spring in a car's suspension
Setting parameters for the interactive simulation Consider a 1500 kg car that supports its mass evenly among four suspension springs, one for each wheel, that depress by 10 cm when the car is at rest.
  1. Draw a free body force diagram of the gravitational and elastic forces that are in equilibrium.  
     
     
     
     
     
  2. Use the diagram to calculate the spring constant k that is required to support one-fourth of the mass of the car when depressed by 10 cm.
  3. Is this a stiff or a loose spring? Do large or small values of the spring constant k correspond to a stiff or loose spring?
  4. Use the interactive simulation to model that spring by setting the mass, spring constant, and displacement. How much energy is stored in the spring?

Part 2: Design a car's shock absorber to minimize oscillations due to potholes

  1. Play the simulator to see what happens to the car after it hits a 10 cm pothole. How would it feel to ride in?
  2. Real shock absorbers also have a hydraulic fluid that damps the car's vertical oscillations. Run the simulation to view the car's response to hitting the pothole when the damping constant is set to (a) b = 100 and (b) b = 25,000 kg/s.
  3. Design the shock absorber by varying b to cause all vibrations to reduce to less than 1 cm in the shortest possible time. How fast does your shock absorber damp the vibrations from this pothole?
