Region 16 Collaborative / Amarillo
Mission
To provide Region 16 science teachers with a support system of scientifically researched, sustained, and high intensity professional development and mentoring to assist them in the implementation of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
Accomplishments
427 teachers have received professional development (STM), 1,664 teachers (CMs) have been mentored, and 67 others have been received out reach (OPD) since our Collaborative was established in 1992. Two "Honoring the Teacher" Events have been conducted. Involvement in the NSF Project ESTT (1197-1999);
EXXON Mini-Grants (1997-2000); Toyota USA Foundation Grants (2001-2005); Shell Science Fair Grants (2005-2007). Fourteen teachers have been honored by the TRC with either Distinguished Teaching Awards or Distinguished Mentoring Awards at the Annual Meetings (1997-2009). In-Service and pre-service teachers PreK-12 have been impacted due to the reform and collaboration among the partnering institutions.

Teaching Summer Institute
Description: Online Bb Science Laboratory Safety and Chemistry.
Date: September 21 - December 5, 2009
Title:Physcial Science 1315
Description: Three college
hour physical science credit content course to include physics & earth
space sciences to prepare teachers for the new earth space science course. Topics will include: wind energy, electrictity, astronomy,
and geology. TAKS modification and
ELPS strategies, mentoring, and journaling will extend the content to all
learners. NSTA Learning Center will continue to provide online resources. Field experiences to wind farms and the
Palo Duro Canyon State Park will round out the course.

Title: Physical Science 1317
Description: Chemistry End-of-Course (EOC) and the Chemistry TEKS,
both new and old, for K-12 will be the focus of this three college hour
physical science credit content course.
Mentoring and journaling will continue.
Date: June 9 - 20, 2010
Title: EDPD 6092: Current Issues in Science Education
Description: Enhancing instuction through Informal Science
Opportunties will be the focus of this three graduate hour science methods
course. Voices of the Land (ERIC),
Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens, Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History, and the
Ft. Worth Zoo; Buffalo Lake Wildlife Refuge, and Project WET are on the
schedule.
