Region 18 Collaborative/Midland

Mission

Region 18 ESC Math Collaborative serves as a first-choice partner in meeting the educational needs of all students in mathematics, through high-quality sustained professional development and support of mathematics teachers throughout the region.

Accomplishments

In 2007-2008 our Math Collaborative provided professional development training to approximately 240 teachers, comprising over 4200 contact hours. Our relationships with higher education institutions in the area expanded.

The 2008-2009 year began with our first formal MTM group, and with news of the funding by NSF of the West Texas Middle School Mathematics Partnership (WTMSMP), a Targeted Partnership project linking four universities (Texas Tech, Sul Ross, UTPB, Angelo State) and three ESCs (15, 17, and 18) in the creation and dissemination of mathematics content training targeted at middle school teachers.

The WTMSMP, in which our Collaborative plays a key role, will provide approximately 30 of our 2009-2010 Mathematics Teacher Mentors with outstanding graduate-level professional growth, sustained over a 5-year period. Our MTM program dovetails with the project by providing recruitment, tuition support, followup training, and the infrastructure for disseminating the knowledge and skills gained by program participants. The WTMSMP is targeted at teachers in grades 6-8, in ESC regions 15, 17, and 18.
