Region 1 Collaborative / Edinburg

Untitled document

Mission

To empower Region One science teachers with sustained, high-quality professional development that will enhance their teaching environment with research-based, dynamic curricular programs that focus on the TEKS and national standards. This Collaborative will foster mentoring and sharing of knowledge by encouraging networking and partnerships between teachers, our local university, and schools. The teachers will promote science excellence by acquiring and disseminating this knowledge in their home districts and attempt to reduce the achievement gap in their science performance by teaching scientific literacy to all students. This spirit of engagement must also extend beyond the borders of our Collaborative as we seek to stimulate, serve, and shape our community.

Accomplishments

In response to the increased rigor of science content and the 4 X 4 graduation requirement for Texas students, the focus for the 09-10 Region One Texas Regional Science Collaborative has been to support secondary instruction in the areas of chemistry, physics, and earth science. Elementary and middle school trainings have set the groundwork for our teachers to prepare students for the demands of a rigorous curriculum. The outreach programs for our elementary and middle schools include Geology: A Change Over Time, Elementary GLOBE, Journaling, and Engineering is Elementary. Currently participating in the 2009-2010 Region One Texas Regional Science Collaborative are 40 STM’s from 13 school districts and 2 charter and private schools. These teachers are successfully implementing the content knowledge learned in their own classrooms and mentoring teachers in their districts. They continue to improve their pedagogy by studying their school data, applying best science and classroom practices, and writing lessons using the 5 E Model of Instruction.
