TAMIU Regional Collaborative / Laredo

Mission

Texas A&M International University has committed to advance the quality of science education in the community of Laredo by engaging in partnerships that will:

  1. Offer an intensive, integrated science program
  2. Enhance the quality and quantity of K-12 science teachers through  professional development opportunities
  3. Facilitate teacher implementation of relevant science learning that intends to reduce achievement gaps in math and science performance of diverse student populations
  4. Develop teacher leaders through mentoring and guidance to support the professional growth of their colleagues

Accomplishments

Texas A&M International University’s Texas Regional Collaborative for Excellence in Science Teaching (TRC) has been working closely with United Independent School District, Laredo Independent School District, the Imaginarium of South Texas, and the Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center at Laredo Community College to provide quality staff development in science content. Professional development opportunities are offered to Science Teacher Mentors (STMs) and district science coordinators after which those individuals are responsible for providing turnaround training to their colleagues at their campus or district. TRC has offered multiple science professional development opportunities through the Summer Science Academy and will continue to do so through the fall and spring semesters. The Summer Science Academy included sessions on science mentoring, environmental science, GLOBE Next Generation, literacy and science connection, and elementary engineering. Some upcoming sessions that will take place in the coming year include continuation of SKeVA, TXESS Revolution, Science and Art Integration series, GLOBE, and the NSTA Learning Center. TRC Project Director and Staff are excited to continue working with the STMs and district science coordinators as excellence in science teaching and learning are promoted throughout Laredo.
